Technology leadership and hands-on engineering
I’m Carl Hinton, a Northampton-based technology leader and software engineer. For more than 35 years I’ve worked on systems that people depend on, from financial services to the websites behind Red Nose Day.
As CTO and Head of Production at Freetimers, I work with directors on what to invest in and with engineers on how to deliver it. I still write code, investigate production problems and work out how to upgrade software while people are using it.
At LexisNexis, magazine and journal teams needed a reliable way to release software across their sites. I built a reusable Drupal platform and automated releases with Jenkins and Rundeck. At Comic Relief, the challenge was the fundraising broadcast itself. I traced slow pages, tuned caching and worked on the call centre portal used during Red Nose Day.
My independent research often starts with a practical question. What happens to everyday physical activity when the way we travel changes? How can infrastructure in orbit remain useful over decades? My articles explore transport, health, technology and long-term resilience.
